Spanish Flu 1918
The Spanish flu was an influenza pandemic spread January 1918 to December 1920 infected 500 million people around the world, about a quarter of the world's population at that time.
15. The public notice issued by the City of Kelowna during spread of the Spanish flu 1918
D.W. Sutherland, the mayor of Kelowna in 1918 issued a public notice during efforts to limit the spread of the influenza epidemic (Spanish flu).
The public notice issued by the City of Kelowna on Thursday, Nov. 7, 1918 reads:
“Notice is hereby given that, in order to prevent the spread of the Spanish Influenza, all schools, public and private churches, theatres, moving picture halls, pool rooms and other places of amusement and lodge meetings, are to be closed until further notice.”
“All public gatherings consisting of ten or more are prohibited.”
